Moss removal job, “by hand with wire brushes” was requested. 18,000 Sq ft apartment building. Steep roof with a four story drop on one side, ten foot sheer drop on the other. 8 inch metal walkway all the way around. No way to tie off. Would you do it?

I’ve been training for two weeks now at my new job and I’ve loved every second of it. Great guys, good management, and a much slower pace than my window washing company, with easier work. Climbing through every company position before settling in the agreed upon management role, so for now... I get to do the fun stuff like the above job!

It’s really interesting comparing this business to my last. They have a much greater focus on safety via technology, whereas my main nod to safety was via lots of training and building a reliance on oneself as apposed to equipment. Different strokes.

Okay, back to work!

Nope. Lifelong injury potential not worth whatever the job is paying.

For something like this we would require our customer to let us install tie-off points to the roof, either along the shear wall or on the roof deck below. We would leave them in place for the next cleaning. We would 100% no be able to perform this work. OSHA says you need a fall protection plan for any fall over 6' IIRC.

This is so not legal. You need a hard anchor on the roof and full fall protection. This would be a bigly osha fine.

I mean a four story drop and your lifelong injury may not last very long at all.

100% agreed. We’re actually going to tell the client we can’t do the job. There was a misunderstanding when bidding it out, our company apparently thought that the roof was flat instead of walled off like it is. Installing anchors would work.... But we’d need quite literally hundreds to do the entire perimeter according to OSHA guidelines and there’s no way in hell the client would accept the bid.

My wife’s a safety manager, and I already know what her response would be if I asked her opinion.

True. The consequences of falling are high, but the risk is fairly low.

What a stupid roof design.

No, I wouldn’t do it.

And I have to wonder how they installed those shingles without any tie off points.

Agreed, awful design. No clue how they went about roofing, luckily that’s a business I haven’t been involved in. That said, we ended up doing it. Went quick (5 hours, yet it was quoted and priced out as a two day job) and all workers felt comfortable doing it. A very small amount was done from a 40 foot ladder, which honestly is a lot more sketchy in my opinion. 5 star review from the property managers means bonus for all the guys, so everything worked out great

Nah, I just know my strengths. Those being balance, cool-headedness and a total comfort with heights.

Kinja'd!!!

Despite being able to swim just fine, jumping off of more than a 6ft height into water absolutely terrifies me

I don’t have very good balance. I grew up working construction for my dad, and right about the time I was getting over my fear of ladders, one kicked out from under me and I fell about 11 feet straight on to my tailbone. Fortunately my fall was on to a wooden deck, not concrete (or worse). I didn’t break anything, and I didn’t quit working construction for several more years, but I never regained confidence in myself or ladders.
